Alliance High School Addition

Alliance Public Schools

Alliance, NE

2011 Completion

$7.4 Million

Alliance, NE is an 8,500 person city in western Nebraska – Home of the Alliance Bulldogs.  Alliance High School engaged BCDM to design a new 750-seat auditorium, servery and lobby space which jointly serves as the main school lobby, commons, cafeteria and study hall and can accommodate up to 232 students.  The new performing arts center would not only serve Alliance High School but the surrounding region as well.

The existing entrance to the school was unpronounced and made way-finding difficult for visitors.  The former entry spaces created by the entrance were inefficient and did not provide a type of entry the school desired.  The school needed a new face to create welcoming interior spaces.

The new addition cohesively connects to the existing building while simultaneously creating a new pronounced façade to the school.  BCDM enacted a design strategy that allows for multi-use, open spaces to be utilized at different times.  The new, pronounced entry and common space employ tall windows to illuminate the interior spaces and further emphasize the feeling of openness.  The common space was carefully designed to be extra cafeteria dining space and lobby space during an auditorium lecture or performance.

The auditorium is equipped with a video conference system to support distance learning, uniting students and staff with previously unobtainable educational opportunities.  It has a full sound and lighting system and stage with complete curtain and fly system.  Other elements of this addition include a scene shop (which will be jointly used by industrial training staff and students) and a loading dock off the adjacent street.
