Edison Elementary School Addition & Renovation

Council Bluffs Community School District

Council Bluffs, IA

2013 Completion

$4.9 Million

Edison Elementary School is a culturally diverse school in the Council Bluffs School District with instruction for students from Pre-Kindergarten through the 5th grade.  The school, named after the great American inventor Thomas Edison, attracts students who achieve at high levels.  An expansion was needed to continue to provide educational excellence.

Working collaboratively with the District, BCDM engaged the opportunity.  The Media Center is an academic library supporting school programs along with the teaching and learning process.  Children discover, read and experiment through independent study.  This discovery begins outside the Media Center within the dynamic floor pattern to assist with wayfinding, as well as circular resin panels suspended by the structure.  Each panel represents the dynamics of the great Inventor Thomas Edison and opportunity students may create for themselves.

In the Media Center, circular panels continue to remind students of the rapidly changing world of information.  There is open shelving, computer access, virtual as well as physical space, creating a collaborative approach to activities and fostering information literacy. Vibrant colors and fun patterns on the flexible furniture give students the motivation to reach their full potential. This space has made a difference in student achievement!
