How did you become interested in this field?
In high school I worked in my school’s scene shop, building the backdrops and sets for the musicals and plays. Over the years, I was given opportunities to design how the sets would interact with the actors and the audience. The idea of having the power to influence how people interact with their surroundings excited me and pushed me to create more innovative productions. I knew I wanted to do more than just design theater sets, so I went into architecture to leave my mark on the built environment and have loved every second of it.
What’s the best advice you’ve heard and why?
While attending an AIAS Forum, I heard the AIA President charge us with “Don’t ask what will happen, be WHAT happens”. Since then it has been a phrase that I bring with me anytime I or colleagues face adversity.
