Madonna School

A Space for Growth & Independence

Madonna School’s newly completed building enhances its transition program for young adults with special needs. Serving students ages 18-25, the program supports individuals as they develop essential life skills after spending much of their day working or engaging in the community. This space fosters instruction in cooking, cleaning, safety, and other daily tasks that empower students to live independently. Rooted in five core learning domains—functional academics, independent living, career vocational training, community mobility, and recreation/leisure—the new facility provides an enriched environment where students can build confidence and skills for a successful transition into adulthood.

Where Learning and Community Meet

At the heart of the new building is a community space that links its two entrances—a unique design made possible by the site’s narrow footprint and steep slope. This central gathering area is anchored by a large learning stair, providing students with a welcoming place to socialize, collaborate, and engage with one another. Surrounding the stair, a variety of flexible furniture encourages interaction and adaptability, allowing the space to support different activities throughout the day. More than just a student hub, this area also serves as a venue for large community gatherings, reinforcing the school’s mission of connection and inclusion.

Classrooms That Empower and Connect

The classrooms in Madonna’s new building are designed to support both independence and connection. Each classroom features flexible furniture that can be easily rearranged to accommodate different activities and learning styles. A small breakout room provides a quiet space for focused work or one-on-one support. Connected by a shared kitchen, the classrooms encourage hands-on learning in a collaborative environment. Large doors with side glazing enhance the sense of community and transparency, allowing natural light to flow while maintaining an open and welcoming atmosphere.

A Hands-On Learning Environment

The kitchen that connects classrooms are central to students’ learning experiences, offering opportunities to develop essential life skills in cooking, cleaning, and safety. Equipped with stainless steel appliances, these kitchens provide a modern, functional space for students to practice meal preparation and maintain a safe, clean environment. The design also addresses a critical need from the previous building: ample storage. With cabinetry and storage solutions, these kitchens offer the space needed for a variety of tasks, helping students gain the independence and confidence they need to transition into adulthood.

Efficient and Collaborative Administrative Spaces

The new administrative areas at Madonna include a welcoming reception desk, multiple offices, and a dedicated meeting room, creating a functional environment for staff and visitors alike. The space also features a small kitchen, providing staff with an area to collaborate, socialize, and recharge throughout the day. This design enhances efficiency while creating a supportive atmosphere for the entire school community.
