Rosedale School

A Building that Supports its Mission

In the heart of Austin, Texas, a beacon of inclusivity and support has emerged with the establishment of Rosedale School. With the mantra “Your child is welcome here,” the school facilitates growth in a safe and engaging environment, regardless of their capabilities. BCDM’s Interior Design team partnered with Page architects to create a space that not only extends a warm invitation but has a building that resonates with its mission to cater to students with diverse requirements, including those who are medically fragile, in need of intensive behavioral support, or transitioning to community living.

Connecting to Community

Recognizing that many of these students may face challenges in experiencing the cultural richness of Austin, the school strategically integrates visual references to local music, art, and food throughout its public spaces. This intentional design fosters a sense of connection to the community and the vibrant spirit of Austin. Upon entering the school, visitors are welcomed into the Living Room, featuring a fireplace for gatherings and a nearby replica of a food truck, bringing the iconic Austin vibe to the heart of Rosedale. The corridors are adorned with strategically placed conversation nooks, varying in size and shape, providing a sense of safety for students during vulnerable moments. These nooks also serve as spaces for one-on-one learning, adorned with images and textures to stimulate the senses.

A Building in a Park

The architectural concept, aptly named ‘A Building in a Park,’ aims to establish a visual and physical connection to nature, known to be a beneficial factor in learning environments. The building maximizes natural light, providing students with direct access to the outdoors from their classrooms. A protected roof terrace on the second floor further enhances the learning environment, offering a unique space for students to engage with nature.

Neighborhoods of Inspiration

The building is divided into three distinct neighborhoods, each inspired by local natural environments: bodies of water, local parks and trails, and the scenic countryside. Colorful and tactile elements within these neighborhoods highlight their respective themes, creating a visually engaging and sensory-rich environment. A remarkable aspect of the project lies in its ability to address a wide range of physical and cognitive abilities while maintaining a cohesive and inclusive atmosphere. The interiors of Rosedale School offer joy and support, recognizing and alleviating the adversities and hardships that often fill the days of its students, their families, and the dedicated staff.
