Historic Mule Barn Renovation (Building 21)

Metropolitan Community College

Omaha, NE

2010 Completion

$2.5 Million

BCDM worked with Metropolitan Community College and the Nebraska State Historical Society to renovate the Historic Mule Barn on the Fort Omaha Campus.  This barn was first constructed in 1910 to house working mules for the Army.   BCDM partnered with MCC to completely renovate the barn’s exterior and adaptively re-use its interior volume to house Events Services offices, general classrooms, and a board room for its Board of Governors.

Construction was completed for the 100th anniversary of the structure.  The key restoration features include a new slate roof and siding, full masonry repair and tuck pointing, and restoration of the wood windows.  The north patio and main entrance to the barn host’s MCC gatherings.  Just inside, a flex lobby space reveals the true character of the one hundred-year-old barn from the beautiful timber structure to the original red brick interior. The original hay loft planking has been removed to expose the clerestory level, filling the barn with natural light.
